Spacious Drill Press Table

I built this auxiliary drill press table to give me the extra support and room I need when drilling cabinet doors and sides. The core is MDF but particle board would also work fine. I edged my table with oak to make the edges more durable. The plastic  laminate provides a smooth surface to work on and should last a long time. Having plastic laminate on both sides keeps the table stiff and stable. The table insert is replaceable and the fence is quick and simple to adjust. The T-slot tracks make it easy to add other jigs and fixtures. My table measures 18" x 35-1/2" and has proved to be a good size for most work. I bought all the parts at my local home center and woodwroking store for about $75.

My Take

There's no question that a big table like this for your drill press is a great idea. Any larger than this one, and you might have to outfit it with it's own legs to avoid tipping your drill press! The second image shows the back side of the fence; ratchet knob, washers and a spacer block so the knob's handle is above the fence. The third image shows the parts in cross-section; Figure A shows the insert, B shows the T-track, and C shows the edging. The only improvement I might make is to make the insert a little bit larger, and then instead of centering it under the bit, I'd center one quadrant of the insert under the bit. That way I could just rotate it 90 degrees when one spot was worn out, so it'd last four times as long before having to be replaced.
