The San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association is again sponsoring the annual Design in Wood Exhibition at the San Diego County Fair (June 8-July 24, 2013), and the entry form is now available on the SDFWA web site (look on the right rail). The deadline is May 3, and prizes total more than $21,000.

Take a look at the impressive winners from the 2012 event here.

This annual event is the nation’s largest woodworking exhibit and competition and the SDFWA is the largest woodworking association in America (1,000+ members). For more information about the association, visit their site at sdfwa.org. For more information about the annual fair, visit sdfair.com.

Looking for design inspiration? For contemporary pieces, I recommend Oscar P. Fitzgerald’s books “New Masters of the Wooden Box” and “Studio Furniture of the Renwick Gallery.” For Arts & Crafts-era work, check out “Greene & Greene: Poems of Wood & Light” by David Mathias and “Grove Park Inn Arts & Crafts Furniture” by Bruce Johnson. For Shaker inspiration, take a look at “Pleasant Hill Shaker Furniture” (available now in PDF format only). For period furniture, I highly recommend searching out copies of Wallace Nutting’s “Furniture Treasury” at bookfinder.com or in used bookstores (the original printing comprises three volumes, with volumes one and two likely of the most interest for period makers).
