Aug coverOur designer, Dan Pessell, is putting the final file touches on the August issue, which leaves our hands on Thursday. So I should be hard at work editing articles now for October and beyond. I am, but I needed a break.

So here’s a quick look at what’s coming up in the August issue (subscribe now to get this issue). It mails to subscribers on or around June 11.

As you can see from the cover, we have an Arts & Crafts wardrobe from Bob Lang (oak is really heavy; just sayin’); a cheap and easy fix for faulty coping saws (no really – it could be the saw rather than a user error!) plus some tips on successful sawing from Christopher Schwarz; a cool mid-century modern coffee table from Mario Rodriguez, which includes a nifty veneer that’s inexpensive and easy to use (but looks expensive and difficult); expert approaches for making mouldings of just about any size and profile with just a few tools (that you likely already own) from Chuck Bender; Bob Flexner shows and tells you how to match color from an existing sample or a photo; and a grain-painted bucket bench from Catharine Kennedy (in addition to her masterful engraving work, she’s quite the accomplished woodworker – in fact, she was the lead carpenter at Shaker Hancock Village in Pittsfield, Mass., for 12 years).

What’s not on the cover (there’s only so much room) is Derek Olson’s build of the “Press Vise” from Plate 280 of André-Jacob Roubo’s “L’art de menuisier” (handy for more than just veneer!); a feature on College of the Redwoods instructor and bespoke furniture maker Ejler Hjorth-Westh by Linda Rosengarten (of Hock Tools fame); Bob Rozaieski on how to make a miter square (Arts & Mysteries); George Walker on modifying a design without mucking it all up; and more.

And because I’m in foreshadowing mode, later this year we’ll have articles from Don Williams, Christopher Schwarz, Graham Blackburn, Frank Vucolo, Tom Calisto, Mary May and many more (including, of course, Chuck, Bob and me). Oh – and we’ll have the winners of the 2014 PWM Excellence Awards featured in the November issue – please enter (the deadline is June 20)! The grand prize is a trip to Woodworking in America 2015.

And having now used up my allotment of parentheses for the day, it’s back to editing for me.
