shaker_table2Spend the last weekend of summer 2013 (and probably the first 1/2 hour or so of autumn, because we may not be done by 4:44 p.m.) with me at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Franklin, Ind., to build a simple Shaker side table. (That would be Sept. 21-22, 2013, for those of you who don’t have the equinoctes memorized.)

This class, while open to woodworkers of any skill level, is geared toward advanced beginners. We’ll be working with one of the most fundamental joints in woodworking, the mortise-and-tenon, and learning how to make tapered legs with a combination of hand and power tools.

The wood will be mostly prepped for you (though we’ll begin by gluing up our tabletops), but we’ll take a look at how to best select stock for the various parts of a table (so that you’ll know how to do so when it comes times to make 10 more of these as holiday gifts). You’ll also learn how to:

• Sharpen and set up a block plane
• Cut tapered legs at the band saw (then clean up the cuts with the aforementioned plane)
• Lay out mortises and tenons
• Cut tenons at the table saw (plus I’ll have some extra stock and my backsaws on hand if you want to give it a try by hand)
• Set up and use a mortising machine (my favorite machine!) (again, if you want to try it by hand, you’re welcome to borrow my tools)
• Get your table ready for finish

Hope to see you there!
