When I joined the woodworking team a couple of years ago I found myself thumbing through a couple of our newest books at the time to get the lay of the land. Those two books,“Chairs & Benches” and “Tables,” are part of our Furniture Fundamentals series and teach you how to build some of the most commonly built furniture forms while covering the essential techniques needed for success.
The books are great jumping off points for understanding furniture building as they cover a range of techniques for varying skill levels. Plus, both books include a wide array of styles. For example, “Furniture Fundamentals: Tables” features a Victorian side table, a Shaker trestle dining table, a mid-century modern Eames-style coffee table and an Asian bedside table – just to name a few. Meanwhile “Furniture Fundamentals: Chairs & Benches” includes a Japanese garden bench, a prairie style spindle chair, a Shaker-style rocker, a few variations on the Morris chair and many others. Both books also include techniques sections that cover the ins and outs of joinery and tricks you need to know.
As we looked at the two books sitting on the shelf together we realized we had one more subject that could fit nicely into the series – and everyone loves trilogies. So, recently we set out to create a third book for the series based on box-based furniture forms. Mastering casework – essentially making boxes – allows you to create a wide variety of furniture from cabinets to bookcases to blanket chests. It felt like the perfect subject to bring the Furniture Fundamentals series to completion.
I’m excited to say that our latest offering in the series, “Furniture Fundamentals: Casework,” is now available. It’s a compilation of casework projects, joinery and techniques from the Popular Woodworking Magazine archives. It offers insight into casework from carcases to drawers and helps you hone your skills through 9 furniture projects that range from simple wall cabinets to blanket chests to beautiful dressers.
We’re thrilled to round out this series of core furniture building topics and offer the collection as a complete set. To celebrate the release of the book we’re offering the entire series at a special discounted price – you’ll save 47% when you order. Check it out – you’ll find a lot of great ideas in these pages and reinforce your understanding of furniture construction.
