The key to effective dust collection is something you can’t see.The tiniest dust particles are the most hazardous to your health, so the best collectors capture the largest number of the smallest particles.

According to Jet, the polyester spun-bond filters on their new single-stage dust collectors (1-1/2 hp,2 hp and 3 hp) capture particles down to two microns; smaller than any other filter currently available.(Manufacturers don’t divulge what percentage of these smallest particles are captured, so we can only compare filters by material and particle size.)

Filtering capacity is the secret behind Jet’s new design.Old-style collectors depend on the lower bag to serve simultaneously as air filter and chip collector, a serious flaw. Jet’s canister/pleated-filter combination has such enormous air filtering capacity that the lower bag serves only to collect the chips.

The lower collection bag is disposable, and a snap ring makes bag changes easy. After removal, you just tie off the plastic bag and toss it out.

According to Jet, the pleated filter should last between five and 10 years in normal, small professional or home shop use.Replacement plastic collection bags cost $3. Retrofit canister and filter kits are available for other 18-in. to 20-in. dust collectors.
