Jackie Chin’s is one of my students at 3rdWard Brooklyn. She is an electronic engineer by trade, who developed a love affair with woodworking. In a recent class she took with me (Modular Furniture) she designed and built a Mah-Jong game table. Jackie’s table is a wonderful example of a successful Campaign furniture piece. The table is made of two boxes that are connected together with a long piano hinge. The box’s frame is joined together with splined miter joints and sliding dovetails. After unfolding the two parts, four nested legs are revealed. The legs are secured together with velcro straps. In each of the box’s corners Jackie designed four triangle shaped sockets to anchor the leg’s stems. The stems are then secured in place using inserts and bolts. The table also includes four concealed drawers and removable liners in case the purple felt is in need of replacement. Jackie’s attention to details and aesthetics is superb. Pay attention to the joints she crafted and the hardware she chose, as even the table's knockdown "nuts and bolts" received special care. A sewn roll helps keep all the hardware well organized while the table is in its transient mode.
