Meet the Staff


Publisher Steve Shanesy is a native of Troy, Ohio, and has more than 20 years experience in cabinet shops. Steve graduated from Ohio University with a BS in journalism and from Los Angeles Trade Technical College with a certificate in cabinetmaking and millwork. He worked as foreman at AE Furniture Manufacturing in Los Angeles -- the citys premier commerical and residential furniture maker. Steve also worked as a promotion manager for the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. in Cincinnati. 513-531-2690 ext. 1238



Editor Christopher Schwarz is a long-time amateur woodworker and professional journalist. He built his first workbench at age 8 and spent weekends helping his father build two houses on the family's farm outside Hackett, Ark.-- using mostly hand tools. He has journalism degrees from Northwestern University and The Ohio State University and worked as a magazine and newspaper journalist before joining Popular Woodworking in 1996. Despite his early experience on the farm, Chris remains a hand-tool enthusiast. 513-531-2690 ext. 1407



Art Director Linda Watts, a native of Three Forks, Kentucky, is a graduate of Western Kentucky University, with degrees in art education and graphic design. Her first major exposure to woodworking was at Shopsmith Inc., where she produced Hands On! magazine and learned to spell "rabbet" correctly. She then partnered with author Nick Engler to produce more than 60 books on woodworking. 513-531-2690 ext. 1396



Senior Editor Rober W. Lang grew up in northeastern Ohio and has been a professional woodworker since the early 1970s. He learned woodworking repairing wooden boats on Lake Erie and in a large commercial shop in Cleveland. Along the way he studied industrial design at The Ohio State University, and his experience includes building custom furniture and cabinets as well as managing and engineering large architectural millwork projects. He is the author of several "Shop Drawings" books about furniture and interiors of the Arts & Crafts Movement of the early 1900s. 513-531-2690 ext. 1327



Managing Editor Megan Fitzpatrick earned a master's degree in English literature from the University of Cincinnati, which enables her to quote large blocks of Shakespearemighty handy in a shop setting. Megan plans to pester her co-workers for help in improving her rudimentary woodworking skills. In the meantime, she edits copy and writes stories, and is the magazine's author liaison. 513-531-2690 ext. 1348



Senior Editor Glen Huey is long-time professional woodworker, author, DVD host and woodworking teacher. Glen joined the staff of Popular Woodworking in 2006. In addition to building projects for the magazine, Glen heads up all our product testing. 513-531-2690 ext. 1293



Staff Photographer Al Parrish has been hiding behind the shutters for almost three decades. He graduated from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, Calif. in the mid '70s, and spent the next 23 years in Los Angeles as a freelance commercial photographer where his clients included Cigar Aficionado magazine, Apple Computer, Toyota and the NFL. His roots drew him back to Ohio in the late '90s, and hes been with F+W Publications, Inc. (our parent company) since 1999.
