A 15″ disc sander, like the new 15-205 from General International, is a great addition to any shop if you’ve got room on the floor and in your budget. There was a time when every patternmaker’s shop had a large sander like this for precision work on large pieces. Most of those shops are long gone, but the need for fine-tuning angles and edges by sanding hasn’t gone away.

Besides general shaping of parts, one of the other tasks for such a machine is fine tuning miters. Even with a good miter saw, joints will often need some tweaking. Making those micro adjustments using a miter saw is an exercise in frustration, but it’s relatively simple using a disc sander’s large, flat surface.

The 15-205 is equipped with “x” and “y” axis miter slots, allowing you to set the miter gauge at any angle to the disc. The 12″ by 22″ cast iron table tilts from 0° – 45°. This adds up to a beefy tool that can handle shaping or making precise adjustments on large or small parts.

The 15-205 is equipped with a 2hp, 220 volt motor, a 4″ dust port, and an enclosed steel stand with a built in storage shelf. The table height is 38-3/8″, and it weighs 212 pounds.

Safety features include a lockout key for the “on” switch, an oversize stop switch, and a mechanical brake.
