The key was put safely in its hole. After the glue dried I planed it flush with the surface. Next, I sawed off and squared the board's ends.

Using a block plane (Stanley low angle, fitted with an after marker blade made by Ron Hock) I planed the edges and the end grain until they were smooth. I finished the design/shaping job by creating a cove around the edges with a router bit.
