HEcoverWe’re trying to get a few issues ahead (a girl has to have a dream), thus we need to beef up our files on our reader-sourced “Regulars” columns: Tricks of the Trade and End Grain. Not only will the winners and runners-up get paid and see their work in upcoming issues of Popular Woodworking, the best Trick and best End Grain article (as determined by the editors) sent in during the contest period (now through November 30, 2013) will also earn the submitter a copy of the forthcoming book “Handsaw Essentials,” signed by its primary author, Christopher Schwarz. (Chris is as yet unaware of this…but I’m pretty sure I can talk him into two signatures.)

Tricks are ideally short bits of information – perhaps with an accompanying picture or illustration if it helps make things clear – that make your work more efficient or more accurate (or simply help to make your time in the shop more rewarding). Tricks submissions should be sent to Chuck.Bender@fwmedia.com, with the word “trick” somewhere in the subject line (or to popwoodtricks@fwmedia.com).

End Grain is typically a thought-provoking or amusing one-page article (480 words or so) that reflects on any aspect of woodworking. (And note that we most often respond well to unique topics or treatments.) End Grain submissions should be sent to Glen.Huey@fwmedia.com, with the words “end grain” somewhere in the subject line.

And of course, you can submit by post. Our address is:
