From the perspective of a kid getting something handed down to me from my parents, I’d much rather have a nice table like yours that’s been modified by my dad than one that was original. I don’t know you, and I don’t know your kids, but that’s what I’d rather have.
I feel your pain, new space, old furniture, lots of memories. Ofttimes they just don’t fit together.
That said, no disrespect, you’re nuts!
Find a new home for the table, build a new one like you want/need. You have the skills, yes? Make it nice, write an article.
