shaker_table2I’ll be at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Franklin, Ind., to teach “Make a Simple Shaker Side Table” on Sept. 21-22, and I plan to eat soft serve ice cream from Marc’s always-available supply for lunch both days. There are still a few open seats; I hope you’ll join me.

The class is open to woodworkers of any skill level, though the techniques I’ll be teaching are geared toward advanced beginners. We’ll be working with one of the most fundamental joints in woodworking, the mortise-and-tenon, and learning how to make tapered legs with a combination of hand and power tools.

Because it’s a two-day class, the stock (cherry) will be prepped for you. We’ll begin by gluing up a panel for the top, then you’ll learn how to:

• Sharpen and set up a block plane
• Cut tapered legs at the band saw (then clean up the cuts with the aforementioned plane)
• Lay out mortise-and-tenon joints
• Cut tenons at the table saw (plus I’ll have some extra stock and my backsaws on hand if you want to give it a try by hand)
• Set up and use a mortising machine (my favorite machine!) (again, if you want to try it by hand, you’re welcome to borrow my tools)
• Get your table ready for finish

    Usually the soft-serve machine isn’t ready at lunchtime.

    Don’t as me how I know this.

    Also, Suzie frowns when you put your lips on the machine and pull the lever.
