If you use a 5/8 dowel, what would be the distance from the edge of the hole to the edge of the board. If y'all remember that the area of a circle is Pi x radius squared then that "little extra 1/8th of an inch diameter" increases the cross section by approximately 50%. Too bad that I didn't think of this earlier: I finally got to assemble my Roubo about two weeks ago. I only exploded two pegs and was able to drive them through with new ones but the 5/8" ones would have been a good idea. No worries, the bench is solid as a rock; a big rock. Loved the book by the way. It helped me build a fantastic bench.

Much tougher indeed.
