Extra No. 47 Bit Gauge — Sold!

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

Update: Thanks very much to those of you who placed a bid (and especially to rwyoung, who has the winning bid) and to those of you who posted entertaining comments. To those of you we offended, my apologies — and I should point out that it was my idea, not my boss’s.

Also, it turns out my “new old stock” still-on-the-original hangtag useful bit gauge is worth $1 more than Chris’s nasty, oily, falling-apart useless “woobie.” I’ll take it! — Megan

Remember my blog entry about the Stanley No. 47 bit gauge? It is, hands down, the best depth gauge for auger bits.

I purchased one for $17.50 years ago. After I blogged about it, well, you know the rest. The price went up.

Recently Megan Fitzpatrick purchased one, and through a series of wacky misadventures, she ended up with two No, 47s. Though Megan loves boring, she does not need two bit gauges.

But she does need a new sink for her kitchen.

And so we are selling this one – it’s unused and in the original packaging – here on the blog. And because we want to add real content – not just sell you something – we had Megan pose with the item, as shown above.

Here’s how this works. Bidding starts at $1. If you want the item, enter your bid in the comments below. The highest bid at noon EST on Friday, April 29, 2011, wins the item.

Managing editor not included.

  1. Hey, Megan, you sure know how to get our attention,
but I watched your “Carabiner” video several times
just to enjoy your great smile in the last 2 seconds
of the video! Keep up your great work!!!

  2. Yeah, it’s unprofessional and sexist and demeaning, and it’s a good thing she wasn’t selling chisels…ah geez, now you’ve got me doing it!!

  3. “Women speak two languages – one of which is verbal.”

    William Shakespeare

Looks like Megan is speaking the OTHER language here. And well spoken it is (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

  4. Hey Guys, How about treating Megan like the Pro that she is, and cut the sexism. In this day and age, this is totally inappropriate. Megan has proven herself as a valued member of your staff, in my estimation, and should not be treated as a “sex” object, and Megan, if I were you, I would put my foot down on stunts like this, and think of all the negative publicity that it causes for the women that are trying to show that they can hold their own in the woodworking industry!

    • What are you talking about? All they are trying to do is to sell a Stanley bit gauge. And have a bit of fun while doing it.

Not everything has to be a Serious Discussion by Serious People. We get enough of that from the blowhards out of Washington DC. Look where that’s gotten us.

    • And I recall a “sultry pose” (his words not mine) struck by an open shirted Chris Schwarz posted on a forum a while back. LOML commented that with pictures like that she might consider looking at my woodworking stuff more often… then she laughed and said, “no, not really”

These guys are HAVING FUN… I never thought I’d link to Barbara Streisand song from a Popular Woodworking blog…but here you go
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_g3kkGH8Mo

      • Ok.. I’ve googled “sultry pose” in all my woodworking forums and couldn’t find it… I’m sure it was something like that but I’m going to stop looking now because my wife is starting to look at me funny….

        • ugh… found it… it was “come hither look” not “sultry pose”… either way… LOML is REALLY looking funny at me now

I’m going to go and google some baywatch now to feel better

  5. I’m always looking for tools I don’t have. After seeing the picture, for some reason I can’t get my mind off this one. I’ll bid $40.50 for the depth gauge.

  6. oh wait, I mean
“how does this make me a better woodworker? humph humph..”

    (and I didn’t see the $35 bid…)
On second thought $40 if it’s signed $35.50 if it isn’t (I want to hang it up with a framed copy of this article :) )

  7. I received one of those gauges as a Christmas present from a fellow woodworker a couple years ago but the gift wrapping wasn’t nearly as attractive. I don’t think I’ll bidding on this gauge since I don’t need two of them, however I am really looking forward to Megan’s next surplus tool sale. And dreading Chris’s…

  8. I think I hear HR stumbling over desks, chairs and dust collection ductwork (how’d that get on the floor?!) in her hurry to strangle you…
