Woodturning with Tim Yoder is presented by Popular Woodworking Magazine. New full episodes are available every other week on our woodturning homepage, and remain free for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, we will make the videos available for purchase.
In the first episode of the new show Woodturning with Tim Yoder, host Tim Yoder shows how to turn a coaster set with an elegant caddy. Made of maple, purpleheart and bubinga, this set can be completed in an evening using just a handful of tools and a small amount of materials. It’s a great way to use up scraps of precious wood that you probably already have on hand.
Tim starts by showing you how to round and flatten the coaster blank and then demonstrates his secrets for getting the maximum number of coasters from a small piece of bubinga. After that, he explains how to turn perfectly sized recesses for the cork inserts that will keep your glasses from sweating on the wood.
Next, you’ll learn how to turn the delicate posts that hold the coasters on the caddy. Tim shows you how to shape the top and turn the shaft so it’s the perfect diameter from top to bottom.
Finally, Tim demonstrates how to turn the coaster base and easily lay out the holes for the posts so they’re perfectly positioned around the rim.
The cork blanks for the center of the coasters are available at most crafts supply stores.
