Shaker Stepstool

Back when the Shakers started making furniture in the late 18th century, the only tools available to them were powered by people. You can build these sturdy shelves using hand or power tools.

Shoji Lamp

Believe it or not, the idea for this lamp came to me while scrutinizing some flea-market lampshades made from used popsicle sticks. The concept was sound. But with a few changes, I got a nice Asian lamp that casts a warm glow.

Arts & Crafts Magazine Stand

At the turn of the 20th century there were an extraordinary number of designs for bookcase and magazine stands offered to the public as completed pieces and construction plans. This version is a variation on a style made popular by Roycroft.

The box itself is dovetailed together. When laying out your dovetails, make sure the back groove falls between the tails and the pins on the sides so the groove won't show at the top. I had to run stopped-grooves on the sides to avoid the groove showing from the outside. All you have to do is stop the cut, then use a chisel to square out the end of the groove.

A Case for Wine

Using CAD software, dovetails and some creative half-laps, we found a way to get the most wine storage in the smallest space.

When you’re riding your jigsaw around the curves, guide the blade smoothly so you don't create bumps and dings that you’ll have to sand out later. Many jigsaws have a dial that allows you to adjust the stroke of the blade to be either gentle or aggressive, depending on the wood you’re manipulating and the mood you’re in.
