Our “I Can Do That” project for the November issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine is this set of Contemporary Shelves. The material for this project, like all of our I Can Do That projects came from the local home center. For this project, I bypassed the pricey project wood at the front of the store and headed for the back of the store where they keep the material for floor joists. Three 2 x 12s contain enough material to build this shelf unit, suitable for books, art or as a room divider.
We began this column back in June 2006 with the idea of featuring projects that didn’t require a lot of tools or time, and that also looked good. Because these are ideal projects for those just starting in woodworking, we decided to make these projects available online, and we wrote a manual (also available free online) about the tools you need to get off to a good start.
Although this may look like a complicated project, it’s all held together with screws, pocket screws in some places, and through screws in others. The article details the process of lay out and assembly, and you can read the article for free online, or download a free pdf version.
