Greene and Greene Furniture-New Book

When you visit the Gamble House, the Scott Gallery at the Huntington Library, or any other exhibit of Greene and Greene furniture it’s easy to spot the woodworkers in the crowd. Just look back and down and you will see them, on their knees to get a close look at a detail that normal people would never consider. I’ve been there and I’ve done that, and so has David Mathias. David did it with a camera in his hand, and he has been able to examine and photograph nearly all of the work designed by Charles and Henry Greene and built by Peter and John Hall that is still in existence.

David’s work has appeared in Popular Woodworking Magazine, and his articles from August, October and November 2008 gave us a taste of what’s in the book. The best thing about this book is its point of view. The photographs are excellent from a technical standpoint, but they also show us exactly what we want to see; the furniture in the room it was designed for, the furniture up close, and really close detailed views of the fine points.

The woodworker’s perspective sets this work apart from others in the genre and the attention to detail and depth of never before seen objects make it a must have for any one interested in Greene and Greene.

We’re expecting to be shipping copies of this important new book at the end of September. You can reserve your copy (and save 20% off the cover price) by clicking on the link below.

Thanks for the nice writeup, Bob. I appreciate it.

I’ve been blogging quite a bit about Greene & Greene and related topics. Anyone interested can have a look at my webpage. Most of the blog entries include a photo and some of the photos are not in the book.
